Arenal Observatory Lodge Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Observatory Lodge is less than 3km away from the famous Arenal Volcano (Volcàn Arenal). The hotel offers a unique view of the volcano and lava and spectacular views of Arenal Lake and the surrounding area. The Arenal Observatory Lodge has grown in popularity especially since March 2007 as the lodge has been able to see the lava flows from the southwest side of the volcano. The hotel is about 20-30 minutes away from the main town of La Fortuna and a few minutes from the local village of El Castillo. It is best to have a car although most tours will pick-up from the Arenal Observatory Lodge for an extra pick-up charge.

The Arenal Observatory Lodge includes some free activities….

  1. Early morning guided hike for 2.5 hours.
  2. Trails
  3. Birding + Walking Trails (chance to spot one of the 350 species of birds found in the area, walk along trails in primary and secondary forest as well as in open pastures.
  4. Waterfall trail (20 minute easy hike though the forest to see the small 20-foot waterfall).
  5. Old Lava Trail (4 hour challenging hike to a river and to the foot of the volcano)

Arenal Observatory Lodge also has a Spring-fed Swimming pool and Jacuzzi

The hotel has a Jacuzzi that is set under a glass gazebo with a great view of the peak of the volcano.

There is also a swimming pool surrounded by jungle plants.

Arenal Observatory Lodge Accommodation

There are 5 types of accommodation:

Standard Rooms: Each room has two queen size beds, a private bathroom, safe and coffeemaker plus a balcony with stunning views of Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake

Smithsonian Rooms: Each room has two queen size beds, a private bathroom, safe and coffeemaker. The best feature of this room is huge picture windows that give you the hotel’s superior views of the Volcano. Some rooms have balconies. Five of the rooms have wheelchair access.

Junior Suites: Large rooms with huge picture windows with two king-size beds, a small living area, coffeemaker, safe and mini-fridge plus private decks with stunning views of Arenal Lake and the active side of the Volcano.

La Casona:  This is ideal for a small group or large family and is set 500 meters from the main hotel building. The Casona has five rooms which share two large bathrooms and a large terrace to view the Volcano. Four of the rooms have a queen size bed and a view of the Volcano from the room and fifth room has 3 bunk beds with a rainforest view. All the rooms have safes.

White Hawk Villa: This is ideal for a small group or large family who have transport or like to hike and is set 800 meters from the main hotel building with superior views of the Volcano and Arenal Lake. The villa has a large living room with television, a dining room and fully-equipped kitchen. The villa has two bedrooms each with a queen bed, two twin beds, a private bathroom and safe.
